Different Types of Senior Living Facilities

Different-Types-of-Senior-Living-Facilities-Apricus-Senior-Living_11zon

As more and more people reach retirement age, they slowly realize the need for diversified senior living options than the generation before them. And that’s why today’s retirees and senior citizens have access to a lineup of choices for where they can spend this new chapter of their lives.

If you’re becoming concerned about your aging loved one living alone, you and your family should look into a suitable senior living facility where your loved one can receive proper care.

This type of research can be new to many families. So we figured why not break down these options so that you’ll know which one suits you or your loved one’s needs.

Aging in place

In this setup, the seniors stay put in their current homes. To make things easier, their homes are modified to suit their needs.

For instance, the mechanical lift is installed over staircases so that they don’t have to climb the steps anymore. Toilets and bathrooms can be installed on the ground floor or closer to the bedroom to combat mobility issues. Residents often work with home healthcare professionals in case they need any assistance.

Aging in place is for seniors who want to maintain an independent lifestyle and are still capable (physically, mentally, and emotionally) of handling most tasks on their own.

Independent Living

Also referred to as retirement communities, independent living holds much appeal to older adults. This senior housing option brings together seniors to live in a community specifically designed to cater to their unique needs.

The housing itself often comes in the form of studio-style units and single/double room apartments. However, there are also high-end housing options and even resort-style communities meant for seniors. These offer a luxury lifestyle, complete with personalized care plans and a wide variety of senior-centric amenities

Retirement communities are great for seniors looking to stay active and social in a senior-friendly environment.

Assisted Living

If the senior is no longer able to live independently, an assisted living community can be a great option. Safety and health are both requisite concerns in senior care. If the senior is no longer able to live safely and healthily on their own, they’ll need qualified assistance.

Assisted living facilities offer tailored care services, round-the-clock security, on-hand specially trained personnel to help with everything from dressing to using the bathroom. Housekeeping services are also offered, and various amenities have the right design for a healthy and active senior lifestyle.

Respite Care

Think of respite care as a short-term stay in an assisted living facility for your elderly loved one. If you need to travel, and there’s no one else around to provide care for your aging parent or loved one, you’ll need respite care. The main benefit here is that residents have access to 24-7 assistance as needed. A short-term stay in respite care also gives you a break as a primary caregiver.

Memory Care Facilities

This option caters explicitly to older adults who are coping with some form of dementia. They can be part of assisted living communities but with a more specialized setup.

For instance, memory care facilities tend to have more staff for overall supervision. Security measures are also more stringent as it is essential to prevent residents from wandering outside the premises alone.

Skilled Nursing Facilities

Skilled nursing facilities are the closest senior care option to a full-on hospital. It provides the highest level of care for residents. These facilities are also best suited for seniors in need of specialized medical care and assistance.

The staff comprises a team of licensed physicians, registered nurses, therapists, and other specialized healthcare professionals, all of whom are always on the premises to provide care as needed. Skilled nursing facilities are usually regulated, so there is some oversight on how the place functions.

Continuing-Care Retirement Communities (CCRC)

CCRCs are like a collection of various senior housing options. The actual accommodation settings, amenities, and services offered can vary. For instance, one community might have independent living apartments, assisted living facilities, and CRCs in various areas. However, there are instances where one might have senior apartments, assisted living facilities, and memory care facilities within the same premises.

It makes it easier for residents to transition from one option to another as their needs change. One great benefit here is that elderly couples can live together since the community can cater to all their needs.
